* Madonna di San Sisto is one of the most celebrated paintings by the Italian Renaissance master Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio, 1483–1520), completed around 1514–1515. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, flanked by Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara. Its composition is renowned for its harmonious balance, serene expressions, and rich color palette, exemplifying Raphael’s mastery of Renaissance ideals of beauty and proportion.
Perhaps most famously, the painting includes two cherubic angels resting at the bottom of the panel, gazing upward with playful, contemplative expressions. These cherubs have become iconic symbols of innocence, grace, and romanticized beauty, widely reproduced in art, jewelry, and decorative objects.
The original painting is housed in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, Germany, and is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance devotional art, admired for its emotional warmth, compositional elegance, and enduring cultural influence.
